The much-anticipated Swadeshi Mela 2024, held at the Mall of India in Naperville, Illinois, from September 12-15, was a resounding success, drawing thousands of attendees and over 80 vendors who showcased a diverse array of artifacts, handloom products, handicrafts, and traditional goods from across India. Organized by DTribals Corporation and Foundation, this Indian-American Trade Fair provided a vibrant platform for promoting Indian culture and commerce in the U.S.
A key highlight of the event was the participation of Mr. Arun Sao, Deputy Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, who graced the occasion as the chief guest. During his visit, Mr. Sao interacted with Chhattisgarhi vendors, including representatives from Bastar Adimjati Khadi Gramodyog Sangh, appreciating their contributions in promoting the state’s rich traditional crafts. He also engaged with Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthy and the event’s key organizers, including NACHA Founders Deepali Saraogi and Ganesh Kar, in furthering Indo-American cultural ties. Mr. Sao has interacted with 20 NRI Community NACHA (North America Chhattisgarh Association) state and national executive and discussed the engagement with Govt with NRI Community. Mr. Sao has ensured that the Govt will take a good initiative for NRI so more and more NRI Community will come forward to support the state program. He also said that current Govt again worked to start the NRI Division which was paused due to conflict with appointment of coordinator.
In addition to Mr. Sao’s visit, the Mela saw the presence of dignitaries such as Consul General of India Shri Somnath Ghosh, Dr. M. Beena of the National India Handloom Promotion Council, Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli, Congressman Bill Foster, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi and other prominent community leaders. These figures highlighted the cultural and economic importance of the Mela, reinforcing its role as a significant annual gathering.
The event also featured a captivating live concert by Padma Shri awardee Kailash Kher, a state handloom exhibition, and a lively Garba and Dandiya night, all celebrating the vibrant spirit of Indian traditions. Over four days, the event attracted an estimated 30,000 visitors, firmly establishing Swadeshi Mela as one of the premier cultural fairs in the U.S.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Sao expressed his gratitude to the organizers and sponsors, pledging ongoing governmental support to further elevate the Swadeshi Mela in the years to come. Organizers, buoyed by the tremendous response, are already planning next year’s edition, looking to build on the success of this year’s event.
